You don't need to have stamps that would ordinarily be worth writing home about in order to start collecting... because every stamp is worth writing home about in its own way.
Here we have a Queen Elizabeth II Decimal Machin, 2nd Class, in blue with a cancellation mark. As a result of the transition towards barcoded stamps in 2023, this stamp is no longer valid for postal usage. And following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, no more new stamps will have her face on them. So although this is an extremely common stamp - and one you likely have lying around somewhere if you live in the UK - it nonetheless holds some historic value.
I will be removing this stamp from the torn piece of envelope it is on and adding it to a stockbook later.
